The Road to the Majors
From Kingman, Arizona to a Cy Young Award
Tarik Skubal first started training baseball at Kingman Academy of Learning High School. From there, he went on to play college ball at Seattle University in Seattle, Washington, before making his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2020.
By 2024, Skubal had established himself as one of the best pitchers in the game, winning the pitching Triple Crown and taking home his first Cy Young Award.
The Deal Itself
Number 29 is now in Dodger blue
Skubal now wears Dodgers number 29, acquired in a blockbuster trade that sent Zyhir Hope, River Ryan, and Brady Smith to Detroit. As part of the deal, the Dodgers also picked up the money remaining on Skubal's contract for the season.
Skubal's side had reportedly hoped for a longer-term deal, but with his free agency on the horizon, both sides ultimately navigated toward this arrangement instead.
Why Detroit Let Him Go
Losing an ace, but not empty-handed
The trade gives up a strong left-hander for the Tigers, who had already signed Framber Valdez to a four-year contract earlier in the year. That move leaves Detroit in a solid position going forward — though losing an ace pitcher is never an easy thing to stomach for a fan base.
Why LA Needed Him
Star power meets a rough patch
For the Dodgers, this is another step in a continued push for dominance across Major League Baseball. The roster already features stars like Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Kyle Tucker, and Roki Sasaki — adding another elite arm only deepens the group.
It's worth wondering whether a seven-game losing streak around August 7th played a role in prompting the move, exposing some vulnerability ahead of the playoff run. It's also worth noting Ohtani had been sidelined from pitching for a stretch, though he recently completed a bullpen session. Taken together, those pieces help explain why the trade came together when it did.
Building Toward a Dynasty
The Yankees did it once — can LA do it again?
The bigger question is whether the Dodgers have a real shot at winning the World Series again this season. The Yankees won three straight titles in 1998, 1999, and 2000 — a genuine dynasty — and the Dodgers look like a team operating in similar dynasty-building mode. With pitchers like Eric Lauer and Kris Bubic facing free agency down the road, adding Skubal helps insulate the rotation against future departures or injuries.
For now, though, the focus is squarely on winning it all this year.
The Dodgers hold a strong divisional lead despite their earlier losing streak. Their road record sits at 37–25 — mirroring their home record exactly. With Ohtani contributing heavily on both sides of the ball, the team hopes to hit full stride once the playoffs arrive.
Skubal, By the Numbers
The stat line behind the Cy Young pedigree
Across those 18 starts, Skubal has already built a dominant strikeout total, and in his first couple of outings since joining the Dodgers, he's kept adding to it — trademark triple-digit fastball and all.
